Strange Fruit

"Strange Fruit"原本是首由一位居住在紐約Bronx區的猶太教師Abel Meeropol所寫的詩作，是他在看到由攝影家Lawrence Beitler所拍攝的一張有關發生在印地安那州，白人對兩位黑人Thomas Shipp和Abram Smith進行私刑處決的照片後，有感而發的作品；於1937年發表於“The New York Teacher”(筆名Lewis Allan)。
在商請多人幫忙譜曲未果之後，Abel Meeropol親自為這首詩創作了音樂，歌曲也漸漸流傳開來，成為紐約地區著名的抗議歌曲。在格林威治村經營Cafe Society夜總會的Barney Josephson聽到後，把它介紹給女歌手Billie Holiday。
1939年Billie Holiday首次在Cafe Society演出此曲，曲終全場鴉雀無聲，許久才爆發出如雷掌聲。Billie Holiday日後坦言，在演唱"Strange Fruit"之初，確曾害怕遭到報復，但因為歌詞讓她追憶起她的父親，才堅持演出；這首歌從此也成為Billie Holiday現場演出的固定曲目。
同年，Billie Holiday為Commodore唱片公司灌錄此曲，在所有廣播電台禁止播出的情況下，發行三個月後，成功進入流行排行榜第十六名。
麥坎錫白色恐怖時期，美國眾議院非美活動調查委員會對共產黨滲透黑人社群的聽眾會上，黑人歌手Josh White在麥克風前朗讀了"Strange Fruit"的歌詞，使它永久出現在美國國會的記錄上。
「南方樹上結著奇異的果子，
血紅的顏色染滿樹葉和根，
黑色的軀幹在南方的風中輕飄，
白楊樹上掛著奇異的果子…」

Southern trees bear a strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the Southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.
Pastoral scene of the gallant South,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh!
